1. Coming to Heraklion:
By air:
The airport Nikos Kazantzakis (airport Code: HER heraklion-airport.info) is the only one in Heraklion. Heraklion has about 5 direct flights per day from Athens (ATH) and at least 2 direct flights per day from Thessaloniki (SKG). Please consider that Chania airport, located in the west part of the island (approx. 2-3 hours drive from Heraklion and a well-established bus connection between the two cities) is broadly connected by touristic cargo flights with plenty European cities.
By boat:
Heraklion harbor is located close to the city. There are two major shipping companies on the line: Athens-Heraklion. Minoan lines and ANEK lines provide daily service from and towards Crete. There are taxis available as well as buses near the harbor. If you would like to rent a car, you will find a number of rental agencies in the city center (15-20 minutes’ walk or 2 minutes by taxi).
About Crete – the Island
Crete, is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. It is the historical land of Daedalos and Ikaros, the Minoan civilization and the Palace of Knossos & Faestos. It is the home of El Greco and Nikos Kazantzakis. Crete has a strategic geopolitical position in the south-eastern Mediterranean sea connecting three continents and various cultures. It possesses an exquisite 1,000-kilometer-long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, which afford a multitude of soft, sandy beaches along the beautifully blue Mediterranean Sea. Besides being a major attractive holiday’s destination in terms of leisure, nature, history and food is an important agricultural production sight and a hotspot of traditional agricultural knowledge and considered the cradle of Mediterranean diet.
About Heraklion – the City
Heraklion, is the biggest city of Crete, centrally located as a plethoric crossroads of travel activities being full of places to discover. With the current efforts to open up the wonderful mediaeval city center, it reveals a past full of history and great events that reflect its location at the crossroads of three continents. The city is also the commercial, academic and technological canter of the island, hosting several internationally important institutes, besides Hellenic Mediterranean University (former TEI of Crete) hosting and co-organising the event, such as the University of Crete, the Natural History Museum, the Foundation for Research and Technology or the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. Heraklion also offers a wealth of museums, a summer-long arts festival, historical sightseeing, amazing nightlife and events throughout the year.
2. Coming to the Forum venue (Hellenic Mediterranean University - HMU / Former TEI of Crete):
The Campus of the HMU (formerly known as TEI of Crete) is located in the outskirts of Heraklion (consult the map in the lower part of the web-site's homepage). Frequent urban bus connections exist from the city center as well as from the airport to the campus.
Taking a taxi is also an affordable option, as prices may range from 10-12 € from city center, and to 15-20 € from the airport.
